Slag is an element introduced in Borderlands 2, created as a by-product of refining Eridium. Slag elemental weapons have a chance to coat enemies in slag. Slagged targets take increased damage from all non-slag sources.
Slag can be formed by many objects and creatures:
- Guns are the most obvious, as slag can be found firing from any weapon type.
- Barrels which are purple in color contain slag and when ignited will coat anyone near in slag.
- Grenades can also deal plasma damage if a "Slag" upgrade is on the equipped Grenade Mod.
- Shields can also produce an slag burst or nova when depleted.
- Creatures can also have the ability to generate slag. All creatures capable of creating slag are also immune to slag.
- Action Skills can be enhanced by a slag artifact, creating the slag effect when used on enemies.
Effectiveness[]
Slag damage has been nerfed from previous games, as slagged enemies will now only take +50% more damage from non-slag sources instead of double.
The slag-coating effect lasts 8 seconds on normal enemies. However, bosses tend to have Slag resistance that reduces the duration of the Slag effect. Raid bosses have such high resistance that the Slag effect typically lasts only a fraction of a second in Normal or True Vault Hunter Mode.
In Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, Slag effects are boosted to last longer and cause double damage (+100%) from non-slag sources. Even damage from slag sources will enjoy a +50% bonus.

Notes[]
- Purple barrels slag nearby targets when destroyed. They also damage nearby enemies like other barrels, but about half the normal amount, and without a damage-over-time effect.
- Slag weapons have a higher chance (2x) to proc compared to similar weapons of a different element.
- Hyperion has created this element, along with antimatter.
